After Parkland

“After Parkland” is a documentary short that tells the story of resilience and courage through the lens of the parents that lost their children at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018. The Alhadeffs lost their daughter, Alyssa, a standout soccer talent. Lori Alhadeff was once a stay-at-home mom, is now the president of a nonprofit that she founded, called Make Schools Safe, Inc., and a member of the Broward County School Board. Her activism is a tribute to her daughter Alyssa, and exemplifies the courage it takes to make a life worth living.
Parkland father Manuel Oliver is demanding change one mural at a time. The fifty-year-old Oliver has been touring the country creating murals on sixteen-foot-wide canvases, everywhere from the National Rifle Association to the U.S. Capitol. The murals depict his son Joaquin, who was one the the seventeen killed in Parkland. He is surrounded by Parkland students like Emma Gonzalez, David Hogg, and Matt Deitch, and has become known as the surrogate father of the movement. He continues to interact with the Parkland leadership, and appeared with them this summer at Desmond Tutu’s International Children’s Peace Prize ceremony. This prestigious award for activism shows that the students from Parkland have garnered recognition. While this movement has made great strides, the piece also looks at the political tension stemming from gun violence in America. Through his activism and perseverance, Manuel Oliver embraces a life worth living through the ashes of his son’s death.
